Matt Schaub is a professional American football player, who plays quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League. He was selected by the University of Virginia Falcons in the 2004 NFL Draft. Born Matthew Rutledge Schaub in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 25, 1981, Matt was born to Dale Shaub and his wife Debbie Schaub. He grew up in West Chester, where he attended West Chester East High School, Pennsylvania. In high school, Matt was a three-sport star; he played basketball, football and baseball. After his high school career, he went to the University of Virginia where he played college football with the Virginia Cavaliers.
During his freshman year in 1999, he was redshirted and he joined the team the following year. Matt didn’t get much playing time as he played alongside Dan Ellis and Bryson Spinner. At one point, when Dan Ellis was out with an injury, Matt and Spinner were allowed nearly equal playing time as they both alternated playing. He finished the 2001 season with 10 touchdowns, 8 receptions and 1,524 passing yards.
The following year, he transferred to the University of Richmond where he continued his academic career. There he recorded his breakout season in 2002; thus finishing the season with 28 touchdowns, seven interceptions and 2,976 passing yards. He won the 2002 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and the ACC Player of the Year. He was also named to the All-State Virginia team. In his senior year, he had 18 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and 2,952 passing yards. He won the Continental Tire Bowl MVP in 2003 and was named to the All-ACC college football team. He received the John Acree Memorial Trophy and the Ben Wilson Award from the University of Virginia.
Professional career
Matt Schaub was selected by the Atlanta Falcons 90th overall draft in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He was drafted alongside Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger the same year. On joining the Falcons, he replaced Michael Vick, having only played six games with the team in 2004. The following season, he won the Most Valuable Player award after an impressive performance in the preseason game of the American Bowl in Tokyo, Japan. He has one touchdown, 208 passing yards and two interceptions this season.
Schaub joined the Houston Texans in exchange for second-round picks in 2007 and 2008. He was named the Texans’ starting quarterback upon his arrival and played seven seasons with the Texans, ending his career with them in 2013.
